Why look at your life in weeks?

A 90-year life is about 4,680 weeks. That fits on one sheet of paper, and seeing it all at once changes how it feels. The weeks you have already lived are filled in; the rest are open. It is meant to be encouraging, and most people find it is: there is still a lot of room, and every week is visible and countable.

How to read the grid

Each row is one year of your life, starting on your birthday. Each square in the row is one week, so the grid runs from week 1 of your first year in the top left to week 52 of your 90th year in the bottom right. The bright square is the current week. If you choose a sex and country, the softly highlighted squares after it run to the average age for people like you in the WHO 2023 life tables; for most countries that ends somewhere in the 70s or 80s. The plain squares beyond are the years many people still get to live.

Ideas for using your printed grid

  • Mark the chapters. Color in school, first job, moves, children, big trips.
  • Plan forward. Circle the weeks of things you want to do in the next five years.
  • Keep it visible. Pin it above your desk as a quiet reminder that weeks are the unit you actually live in.

Prefer exact numbers? Count the days you have lived, see your time ahead on the life expectancy clock, or check the life expectancy calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks are in a 90-year life?

About 4,680: 90 rows of 52 weeks. That is the whole grid on this page. (A year is really 52 weeks and one or two days; the grid starts each row on your birthday so the extra days never add up.)

How do I print my life in weeks?

Enter your birth date and press Print. The grid is laid out to fit one portrait page (Letter or A4), in black and white, with your weeks lived filled in. Choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog to keep a copy.

What do the outlined squares mean?

If you choose a sex and country, the softly highlighted squares show the weeks between today and the average age for people like you, based on the WHO 2023 life tables. It is a statistical average, not a forecast.

Where does the idea come from?

Drawing a life as a grid of weeks was popularized by Tim Urban’s 2014 “Your Life in Weeks” post on Wait But Why. This page is our own free, printable version.
